Matte or Glossy Photo Prints? How to Choose the Right Finish

3 October 2026

Choosing a favourite photo is usually the easy part. Deciding whether to print it in matte or glossy can be less obvious.

The right finish affects how colours, contrast and fine details appear, as well as how the print looks in different lighting. Neither option is automatically better for every image, but they are suited to different types of work.

Here is the simple answer: we recommend glossy for professional photographs and real-life photos. Matte is better suited to typography, illustrations and artwork.

What is a glossy photo print?

Glossy photo paper has a smooth finish that reflects more light. This helps colours look richer and gives photographs stronger contrast and clearer detail.

Glossy is normally the best choice for:

  • professional photography
  • family and wedding photos
  • pet photographs
  • holiday and travel pictures
  • portraits
  • landscapes and nature photography
  • bright, colourful real-life images

If your image came directly from a phone or camera and you want it to look like a traditional photograph, choose glossy.

Our glossy paper stock is selected for each print size, including 280gsm Premium Satin Photo Paper for A4 and premium photo paper for our larger sizes.

What is a matte print?

Matte paper has a softer, non-reflective surface. It reduces glare and gives printed designs a more understated, gallery-style appearance.

Matte is generally better suited to:

  • typography and quote prints
  • digital illustrations
  • graphic designs
  • line art
  • scanned artwork
  • posters with large areas of flat colour
  • designs intended to look soft or textured

Because matte paper softens colour and contrast, we do not recommend it for most real-life photographs through our Print My Photo service. A photograph printed on matte may look flatter or less crisp than the same image on glossy paper.

If you are uploading a professional photo, family picture, pet photo or camera image, glossy is the safer choice.

Matte vs glossy at a glance

Choose Glossy if:

  • the image is a real-life photograph
  • colour, contrast and detail are important
  • it is a portrait, family photo, pet photo or landscape
  • you want a traditional photographic finish

Choose Matte if:

  • the image is mostly text or typography
  • it is an illustration, graphic design or line drawing
  • you prefer a softer, non-reflective finish
  • the design was created as artwork rather than captured by a camera

What about glare and framing?

Glossy paper reflects more light than matte paper. If a print will sit directly opposite a bright window, you may notice reflections.

However, many framed prints are placed behind glass or acrylic, which can create reflections regardless of the paper finish. For real-life photography, the stronger colour and detail of glossy will usually be more important than the small difference in surface reflection.

If glare is your main concern and the image is a photograph, think about where the frame will hang before changing to matte. Moving it away from direct sunlight or using an anti-reflective frame can help without sacrificing photographic detail.

Does the photo need to be professionally taken?

No. Original phone photos are often perfectly suitable for printing.

For the best result:

  • upload the original image from your phone or camera
  • avoid screenshots and social-media downloads
  • do not enlarge a small cropped preview
  • choose the clearest version you have
  • leave a note if there is anything important near the edge of the photo

When you use Print My Photo, we give you a quick image-quality guide and review every order before printing. We also check the crop and will contact you if the file is unlikely to produce a good result.

What size should you choose?

A4 is selected automatically on our upload page because it is an affordable, easy-to-frame starting point. It works well for shelves, desks, bedside tables and smaller wall spaces.

A3 has more presence and is a popular choice for family photos, portraits and pet photographs.

A2 and A1 create a much larger statement, but large prints need a strong original image because any softness becomes more visible as the photo is enlarged.

Our print size guide gives a clearer comparison if you are deciding between sizes.

Our recommendation

For a real-life photo, choose Glossy. It is designed to give photographs stronger colour, contrast and detail.

Choose Matte when your uploaded image is typography, an illustration, line art or another artwork-led design.

We have deliberately left the finish unselected on our upload page so that every customer makes an active choice rather than accidentally ordering the wrong paper.
